Worcester Man Loses Both Legs in Car Accident; Driver Charged with OUI

A Worcester man lost his legs after he was pinned between two cars by a drunk driver on February 25 in Worcester. The victim remains in intensive care at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

The accident occurred Sunday night on Vernon Street. The victim, a 36-year-old man, was getting items out of the trunk of a friend’s vehicle parked on the side of the street when he was struck from behind, trapping him between the two vehicles and severing his legs. Paramedics retrieved the victim’s legs from the scene, but they were unable to be reattached.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 22-year-old Worcester man, told officers that he got into his car and began searching for his girlfriend after an argument when the accident occurred. He was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and causing serious bodily injury. The driver has no previous criminal record. Police said the driver’s blood alcohol was twice the legal limit in Massachusetts at the time of the crash.
