Massachusetts Traffic Deaths Rise Even as Traffic Levels Drop Dramatically

Traffic deaths in Massachusetts rose in April 2020 on a year-over-year basis even though traffic was down by 50% amid the COVID-19 pandemic, data from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation show.

There were 28 deaths on Massachusetts roads in 2020, up from 27 in 2019. State officials blame speed and distracted driving for the increases. Among those who died in Massachusetts traffic accidents in April:

  • 18 were vehicle operators
  • 4 were vehicle passengers
  • 3 were riding bicycles
  • 2 were riding motorcycles
  • 1 was a pedestrian

Jonathan Gulliver, Highway Administrator for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, reminded people that open roads are not a license to speed. He told The Boston Herald, “We want to make sure people don’t try to take advantage of the current level of traffic and get to where they’re going faster.”
