Cambridge Construction Site Accident at MIT Dorm Kills One Worker, Injures Two More

A Cambridge construction site accident at a new MIT residence hall at 120 Vassar Street left one worker dead and two injured on February 28. Anthony Costa, 41, of Taunton, and two other men were hit by support beams that fell from an upper level and landed in the area where they were working.

All three men were taken to the hospital. Costa died of his injuries, while the other workers suffered non-life-threating injuries. OSHA investigators were on the scene by late Thursday. All three worked for Walsh Brothers, Inc., hired by MIT to build the dormitory.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said foul play was not suspected in what she called “a horrible accident.”

Walsh Brothers, Inc. has a very limited history of OSHA actions, with only two reported since the year 2000 and none since 2004. In July 2017, the company received the National AGC Safety Award from the Associated General Contractors.
